    • Colorado State University has an online degree program in music therapy that leads to the completion of a Master of Music degree. Only three campus visits are required for this program, with one extended weekend visit per year. Students may pursue the option that does not require completion of a thesis, or they may choose to complete the thesis. For students who do not choose the thesis option, they must complete a written and an oral final exam prior to graduation. Courses include scientific foundation of music in therapy, music of the Romantic era, neuroanatomy and introduction to research methods.

This program is delivered online in a hybrid format, which only requires students to complete the clinical experiences in their local community.     • Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis has a Master of Science degree program in music therapy that is completed entirely online. This program is ideal for music therapists who are board-certified and wish to further their education without inconveniently moving themselves or their families. The curriculum in this program focuses on research methods and theory as they relate to statistics, clinical practice and the thesis. Courses include foundations of music production, music technology methods, philosophy and theory in music therapy and music in medicine.

    • Lesley University has a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree program in expressive therapy that has a low-residency requirement. This program was established in 1975 and is now the largest of its kind internationally. In addition to the online, videoconferencing and email communication methods, students are required to attend the campus three times during the summer for three weeks each visit. Required courses include arts apprenticeship, creative imagination, arts-based research and critical inquiry.
