Boston University's (BU) College of Fine Arts offers two different online degree options for those who want to study within the field of music. BU offers both a Master of Music (M.M.) and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree (D.M.A.). Courses are presented in a variety of formats such as video lectures, media presentations, online assignments, readings and discussion forums. The M.M. program is in the field of music education, preparing students primarily for the role of educators. Courses include foundations of music education, introduction to music education research, music technology, American music, musical and cultural perspectives on the blues, jazz and popular arranging, and orchestration, among others. The D.M.A. program is also in music education. Additional courses in areas such as policy research in music education and quantitative research methods are part of the D.M.A. curriculum.

A second option for online studies in music is Colorado State University (CSU). Colorado State offers a Master of Music degree as well, but with a concentration in music therapy. The program emphasizes neurologic music therapy (NMT), which teaches students how to use music to provide healing and therapy for individuals with various disorders. The degree is a 30 credit hour program and is available online with thesis and non-thesis options. Courses of study include scientific foundations in music in therapy, neuroanatomy, music of the romantic era, analytic techniques, introduction to research methods, design and data analysis, and nonparametric statistics.

Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis (IUPUI) is another option for students wanting to pursue an online music degree. IUPUI also offers the master's degree in music therapy in an all-online format. The degree is requires 30 credit hours. Courses taken as part of the program include foundations in music production, principles of multimedia technology, music technology methods, research methods in music and multimedia, philosophy and theory in music therapy, quantitative and qualitative research, music in medicine and advanced clinical techniques in music therapy. A thesis is also required for this degree program.
