Universities in North Carolina offer students the opportunity to study for online graduate degrees. Programs are available at major research institutions in the state capital and state schools in small cities. Students have the opportunity to study with others at the same time in virtual classrooms or access class lessons on their own time.

    • North Carolina State University, a large research institution in Raleigh, offers an online master of computer science degree. Applicants who do not have an undergraduate degree in computer science must complete preparatory classes. Students must have a 3.0 undergraduate grade point average (GPA) and take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The GRE requirement is waived for students with an undergraduate computer science degree from a school in the United States and a GPA of at least 3.5.

    East Carolina University's Master of Arts in Education---Special Education

    • Teachers who are interested in expanding their knowledge and career opportunities in research and instruction of children with special needs can enroll in East Carolina University's online master of arts in education program. The school's education department offers sub-specialties in different types of disabilities. Synchronous instruction is available where students can join in online classrooms via streaming video in order to learn together. Application requirements include GRE or Miller Analogies Test scores, a teaching license and three letters of recommendation.

    University of North Carolina at Charlotte Master of Science in Engineering Management

    • Engineers who would like to move into management positions can earn a technical alternative to a master of business administration degree. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte offers a master of science in engineering management, a program that trains students in organizational behavior, business operations and project management for engineering. Synchronous instruction is available. Entrance requirements include an undergraduate engineering, technical or science degree and GRE or Graduate Management Admission Test scores. Students must also have a 3.0 GPA in undergraduate science and math coursework.

    Fayetteville State University Master of Science in Criminal Justice

    • Students can advance their careers in law enforcement, corrections, the legal industry and other professions with a master of science in criminal justice earned at Fayetteville State University. Admission requirements include a GPA of at least 2.75, GRE scores, an essay and two letters of recommendation. While the program can be completed completely online, students have the option of also mixing on-site classes into their studies.
