Masters in Library Science Programs in North Carolina

Library science is the study of how to accurately and ethically organize, systemize and deliver information to the public. With a degree in this field you can work with information systems in corporate, nonprofit or governmental environments. If you're interested in pursuing a master's degree in library science, the state of North Carolina offers several excellent choices among its university system.
  1. North Carolina Central University

    • Located just north of Raleigh, North Carolina Central University offers a master's program in the study of library information science. As a student here, you will take courses in management, analysis and research methods. Students also must demonstrate proficiency in another language such as computer programing, American Sign Language or a spoken foreign language. The entire program is 36 credit hours, and tuition in 2005 was $3,111 per year for in-state and $7,341 for out-of-state residents.

    University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill

    • The School of Information and Library Science at one of the nation's premier research universities, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, offers a 48-credit-hour Master of Library Science degree program. Courses focus on retrieval and categorization of information, and specific classes cover everything from network management to technology issues and children. In-state tuition per year for students entering the program in the fall of 2010 was $6,363 not including fees, room or board, and out-of-state tuition was $21,093. Each student in the program must own a laptop.

    University of North Carolina at Greensboro

    • Students in the Master of Library and Information Studies degree program of the Department of Library and Information Studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro complete courses in everything from indexing to media service production. Students are required to complete 36 credit hours, 24 of which must be at the 600 level or higher. Tuition varies depending on state of residence and whether the student participates in a graduate assistantship.
