Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem has a Master's in Counseling degree that includes classes in treating addictions, career counseling and group counseling. The University of North Carolina in Charlotte has a community counseling focus which is similar to mental health counseling. Appalachian State in Boone, Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro and Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory also offer clinical mental health counseling programs.
Rehabilitation counselors help people with disabilities in areas like job skills, case management and medical care. Winston-Salem State University offers a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling that includes 100 clinic hours. East Carolina University in Greenville also offers a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling.
School counselors focus on children and adolescents in a school setting. Masters programs for school counselors include coursework in education as well as in counseling and child and adolescent development. Wake Forest offers a school counseling specialty program, as does UNC Charlotte, Appalachian State, Western Carolina, University of North Carolina-Pembroke, Lenoir-Rhyne and North Carolina A&T.
Marriage and family therapy focuses on counseling the family unit, rather than just the individual. Appalachian State offers a Marriage and Family Therapy specialization. Substance abuse counseling is another specialization, and it's offered by East Carolina University.
