In 2010, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill received the 28th place ranking among all universities in the United States from U.S. News and World Report. The public college opened in 1789 and has grown to an undergraduate enrollment of nearly 18,000 students. Admission to the university is highly selective; only around one-third of students who apply receive an invitation to attend, according to the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. The Bachelor of Science program in computer science requires course work in theory, computer systems, programming languages and interdisciplinary studies, like computational linguistics or biomedical engineering. Students have the option to complete an undergraduate independent research project to graduate from the program with an Honor's designation. Master's and doctoral degrees are also offered in the field.

Located in a suburb 5 miles north of Fayetteville, Mars Hill College is a private institution affiliated with the Baptist Church. The college was ranked 36th among all baccalaureate colleges in the southern United States from U.S. News and World Report in 2010. Students in the Bachelor of Science in computer science curriculum have the option to study either general computer science or computer information systems. The latter program approaches the discipline from a business perspective with classes on management, business law, web design, multimedia, systems design and leadership. The general program focuses upon mathematics and design with classes in probability, calculus, data structures and systems administration. All students at the college take classes in religion, philosophy and ethics as part of Mars Hill's general education requirements.

Johnson C. Smith University is a historically-black college in Charlotte with more than 1,500 undergraduate students. The university grants a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science and information systems with required curriculum combining computer science and business. Students takes classes in a variety of disciplines, such as Internet and application programming, economics, finance and software engineering. Independent and faculty-sponsored research opportunities are available for students as well as internship placements. Every student at the college receives a free laptop computer to use throughout their time at the unviersity.
