The University of South Carolina in the city of Columbia offers engineering students a variety of degree options through its engineering department. Clemson University is the state of South Carolina's only nationally ranked college of engineering. U.S. News & World Report ranked the Clemson program No. 90 in the nation in 2009. Degrees offered by the Clemson program run the gamut from the Bachelor of Science all the way up the the Ph.D. Engineering disciplines offered at Clemson are numerous: automotive engineering, polymer and fiber science and chemistry, bioengineering, physics, mechanical engineering, biotechnology, mathematical sciences, material sciences, ceramic and materials engineering, industrial engineering, computer science and industrial engineering. Clemson also sponsors a number of research centers and institutes including the Center for Advanced Materials for Thermoelectric Energy Conversion.

The Citadel is a military college located in Charleston, South Carolina. One of the five schools located within the college is its school of engineering. The engineering program ranked 26th in the United States according to the U.S. News & World Report rankings for 2009 among engineering programs nationwide where a doctorate is not the highest degree offered. The school of engineering consists of the departments of civil and electrical engineering. In addition to its traditional undergraduate program, the Citadel also offers certification in technical project management.
