Engineering Colleges in the U.S.

A bachelor's degree in engineering allows students to learn and prepare for a career in engineering. Students with a bachelor's degree in engineering go on to careers in software and computer hardware development, manufacturing, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering and aerospace engineering. "U.S. News & World Report" provides a ranking of the best undergraduate engineering programs in the country for 2011, along with information about the schools and programs.
  1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology

    • Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a private research university situated in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is the top ranked engineering program according to the 2011 "U.S. News & World Report." The school features a School of Engineering that has engineering concentrations for undergraduate students in aeronautics and astronautics, biological engineering, chemical engineering, civil and environment engineering, electrical engineering and computer science, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering and nuclear science and engineering. The engineering program at the university has partnerships with DuPont-MIT Alliance, MIT-CMIT Medical Engineering Fellowship, Siebel Scholars Program and the Xerox Fellowship Program, providing students with further enrichment in engineering. The School of Engineering at MIT educates about 60 percent of the school's undergraduate students and is one of the premier programs of the university.

    Stanford University

    • Stanford University is ranked second for undergraduate engineering colleges by the 2011 "U.S. News & World Report." The private university is situated in the Bay Area, about 30 miles from San Fransisco. The School of Engineering at Stanford University offers engineering programs and concentrations in aeronautics and astronautics, bioengineering, chemical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, management science and engineering, materials science and engineering, and mechanical engineering. There are also interdisciplinary programs available related to engineering, including the architectural design program and engineering physics. The university, in the heart of the Silicon Valley, prepares students through new knowledge, a research-based education and a multidisciplinary, broad-based approach.

    University of California--Berkeley

    • Ranked third for top engineering programs for undergraduate students in the country by "U.S. News & World Report," the University of California--Berkeley overlooks the San Fransisco Bay. This public university features the College of Engineering, which has four engineering majors available for undergraduate students. The majors include engineering mathematics and statistics, engineering physics, environmental engineering science and computational engineering science. Students receive a bachelor of science in engineering science upon completion of studies. The program is multidepartmental and interdisciplinary and focuses on engineering, physical and biological sciences, and mathematics. The curriculum within the program prepares students for further study in engineering at the postgraduate level.

    California Institute of Technology

    • The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) is ranked fourth by "U.S. News & World Report" for undergraduate engineering programs. This is a private institution situated in Pasadena, California. The school has two engineering programs. The Division of Engineering and Applied Science focuses on engineering in relation to different applied sciences. Departments within the Division of Engineering and Applied Science include aerospace, applied physics and materials science, bioengineering, computing and mathematical sciences, electrical engineering, environmental science and engineering, and mechanical and civil engineering.

The school also features a Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, where students focus on chemistry in relation to engineering. The chemical engineering degree within this program relates to engineering and can be an option for students interested in studying engineering.

The school is noted for research project grants from NASA, the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The school is also known for a low student-to-faculty ratio.
