Degrees in Engineering Science

Degrees in engineering science combine a physical or biological science and mathematics with engineering, allowing the student to explore the impact of science on engineering. The curriculum retains the core engineering courses while permitting the student to select a field of science. Some schools allow the student to design his own program of study within certain predetermined parameters.
  1. Associate's Degree

    • Bronx Community College in New York awards an associate in science degree in engineering science. The program requires core courses in general education like English, history, chemistry and public speaking. The specialization courses include three courses in analytic geometry and calculus, differential equations, a computer programming course and three courses in engineering physics. This degree program replaces the first two years in an university engineering program. It is designed for students seeking to transfer to an engineering program to obtain a bachelor's degree. Middlesex Community College in Connecticut offers a similar program as the first step towards the bachelor's degree. Employment opportunities in engineering science are based upon that bachelor's degree.

    Bachelor's Degree

    • A Bachelor of Science in Engineering Science (BSES) is among the degree programs of Tufts University School of Engineering located in Medford, Massachusetts. While most engineering programs are specialized, this program provides flexibility to the student. He can design his own curriculum, subject to the approval of the academic dean prior to the end of his sophomore year. The curriculum consists of one-third engineering, one-third science and one-third as selected by the student based upon his objectives for the program and degree. A bachelor's degree qualifies for entry level jobs, depending upon the area of science pursued.

    Master's Degree

    • The University of Colorado at Boulder College of Engineering and Applied Science offers an Aerospace Engineering Sciences master's degree. Students earn either a Master of Engineering or a Master of Science. Four concentrations, or specializations, exist for students. They include Astrodynamics and Satellite Navigation Systems, Earth and Space Science, Bioastronautics and Structural and Material Systems. The university has research centers conducting work related to each of these areas. Occupations for graduates include designers of aerospace systems, such as unmanned vehicle systems and managers in the aerospace industry.

    Doctorate

    • Louisiana State University College of Engineering in Baton Rouge, in addition to a Master's Degree, offers a doctorate in Engineering Sciences. The Donald W. Clayton Graduate Program in Engineering Science allows students to study and research for this interdisciplinary program among engineering, science, business or law. Two sub-areas of specialization, along with the major area of study, are mandatory. Students have developed programs in materials science and engineering, environmental and technological hazards engineering and information technology and engineering. The Ph.D. in engineering science is open to students with degree backgrounds in engineering or a pure or applied science. Graduates seek jobs in research and development, like materials science, applying their education in science and engineering to develop new products and new materials.
