Women's Colleges in North Carolina

The only option for a woman to obtain a college education in America's early history was to attend an all-female institution. Of course, that it not true today, but some women do select women's colleges for personal, academic, religious or other reasons. Finding the appropriate female college for some students is related to location and, for those interested in North Carolina, several women's colleges exist.

    Salem College

    • Winston-Salem is the home of Salem College, a church-related and the oldest college for women in the United States. The school's history began in 1766 when a Protestant denomination, known as the Moravians, began their first school for girls because they believed women deserved an equal education to that available for men. Today's students at Salem are required to complete a specific four-year course of study that includes academics, community service, self-discovery and career preparation. The school also has a leadership seminar for all students.
