Junior Colleges in North Carolina

North Carolina contains a dynamic group of junior colleges. The College of the Albemarle, Louisburg College and Gaston College are distinct in their respective academic and campus offerings. Each also provides its students with the opportunity to transfer to accredited four-year colleges inside and outside North Carolina through established partnerships with various colleges and universities.
  1. College of the Albemarle

    • College of the Albemarle, established in 1960, is a two-year public institution in northeast North Carolina. COA has campuses in Elizabeth City, Dare County and Edenton-Chowan and offers multiple programs of study. The arts and sciences division features associate degrees in arts, fine arts, general education and science. The associate degree programs are designed for students who plan to transfer to four-year colleges to complete a baccalaureate degree. Technical and vocational divisions include Business Technologies, Engineering Technologies, Health Sciences, Construction Technologies and Public Service Technologies. Many programs in these areas prepare graduates to begin working immediately in their respective fields by awarding certificates or diplomas. Other programs in this division award Associate of Applied Science degrees, which give graduates the option of beginning work or continuing their studies at a four-year college or university.

    Louisburg College

    • Louisburg College in north-central North Carolina is a private coed residential college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The three degrees awarded at Louisburg College are Associate of Arts, Associate in Science and Associate in Business. Within the three divisions are more than 20 courses of study. Louisburg College sponsors six men's and six women's intercollegiate varsity sports programs and is affiliated with the National Junior College Athletic Association. The athletic program has a strong tradition of success. The women's basketball team has claimed two national championships, and over a dozen men's baseball players have played in the major leagues, including former Atlanta Braves player Otis Nixon.

    Gaston College

    • Gaston College is a public junior college with a main campus in Dallas, North Carolina, and satellite campuses in Lincolnton and Belmont. Gaston College is accredited to award more than 40 Associate of Applied Science degrees by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The diverse associate degree programs range from accounting to veterinary medical technologies. Gaston also offers nearly 100 certificate and diploma programs in vocational, technical and medical fields of study. The school enrolls more than 16,000 students each year in curriculum and continuing education programs.
