As of July 2008, Asheville, North Carolina was home to more than 74,000 residents, reports City-Data.com. Due to its large population, Asheville has become a center for education and is home to both traditional four-year universities and two-year community colleges. Asheville's schools include both public and private institutions and offer programs designed for recent high school graduates as well as working adults returning to college.
  1. Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College

    • Established in 1959, Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College is a public-two year institution with more than 10,500 students. The school offers 53 associate degrees and 87 certificates and diplomas, including programs in accounting, air conditioning and heating, nursing, auto repair, culinary arts, drafting, geographic information systems, digital media, hospitality, machining, real estate, surveying and massage. Online courses are available in a number of fields as well. The school's career development center offers coaching on interview techniques, resume writing and job searching. For recreation, students can participate in intramural basketball, volleyball tennis and running. There is also an honor society, student government and clubs for special interests and careers. In addition to its financial aid programs, the college grants more than $190,000 per year in scholarships on both needs and merit bases.

    Shaw University

    • A private Baptist College based in Raleigh, Shaw University offers adult education centers in eight branch locations. The school offers bachelor's degrees in religion and philosophy, sociology, business management and criminal justice. Courses are offered in the evenings and weekends to accommodate work schedules. Internships are often available for students in these programs to give them hands-on experience in the field. Like students at Shaw's main campus, those that attend courses at the Asheville branch may apply for federal and state financial aid and are eligible for Shaw's institutional scholarship.

    University of North Carolina at Asheville

    • With more than 3,500 undergraduate students, the University of North Carolina at Asheville is a public, four-year institution. The school offers 30 undergraduate majors with psychology, literature and environmental studies being the largest, according to the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. All students at the university must take six credit hours of foreign languages, four hours of writing and English, seven hours of natural science and three hours of health and wellness to graduate. The schools offers study abroad programs in over 40 foreign countries as well as internships in many areas. In sports, the school has 14 intercollegiate teams for men and women as well as 30 intramural teams. Approximately 62 percent of freshmen and 58 percent of returning students receive financial aid at the university, reports Barron's.
