Acting Colleges in North Carolina

If you thrive off of being on the stage, going to college for acting is an ideal endeavor. Getting a bachelor's degree in theatre or acting from a North Carolina public school can help you get started in regional theatre tours. While North Carolina might seem too far from major theatre and film markets, just remember that award-winning actress Sandra Bullock got her start there.

    • East Carolina University is a four-year public university with a School of Theatre and Dance. A significant alumna, Sandra Bullock, went on to win numerous awards, including a Golden Globe and two Screen Actors Guild awards. The Bachelor of Fine of Art (B.F.A.) in theatre arts has several concentrations including professional actor training, musical theatre, theatre education and theatre for youth. The B.F.A. program typically requires around 120 hours. For instance, the concentration in professional actor training requires 126 hours with 55 hours in the concentration. The 120-hour Bachelor of Art in theatre arts program does not require an audition. It requires 42 hours in general education and 42 hours in a theatre core.

    University of North Carolina at Asheville

    • The University of North Carolina at Asheville is a four-year public liberal arts college with a Drama department. The Bachelor of Art in drama includes a concentration in acting that encourages you to learn about theatre history and dramatic literature. It requires 27 hours of drama courses, 13 hours of acting courses, drama competency requirements, and general education. You can also pursue a 24-hour drama minor that includes courses in voice, theatre and acting.

    Appalachian State University

    • Appalachian State University is a four-year public college with a Department of Theatre and Dance. You can pursue a 122-credit Bachelor of Art in theatre, a 122-credit Bachelor of Science with licensure in theatre, or a minor in theatre. Bachelor of Art students choose whether to concentrate in performance or general theatre. The performance concentration has an emphasis on acting and improvisation. The Appalachian State theatre program is geared to help you become a theatre teacher, professional actor, hobby actor or graduate school student.
