The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, or UNC, is a research university and one of the oldest public universities in the United States. Famed for its athletics, UNC is considered one of the original "Public Ivys" for its education. It is a popular school for students studying biology, business administration, psychology, journalism and political science.
The other two corners of the Research Triangle are Duke University and North Carolina State University. Located in Durham and Raleigh, respectively, these two schools are UNC's main rivals in sports and competitors for students.
A number of community colleges are located in the area, including many in Durham and Raleigh, although none in Chapel Hill itself. The closest school is Central Carolina Community College's Pittsboro campus, approximately 15 miles away.
