Raleigh is North Carolina's capital and its downtown is home to three four-year colleges and universities. Its proximity to a major scientific research area, Research Triangle Park, makes valuable internships and college work experience possible.   1. Meredith College

    • Meredith is a private women's college founded in 1891. The undergraduate curriculum is liberal arts-focused. The five graduate level programs, offered through the John E. Weems Graduate School, are co-educational. Meredith has seven residence halls, and freshman students are required to live on-campus. The school participates in NCAA Division III sports.

    North Carolina State University

    • North Carolina State University is a public co-education institution made up of 10 different colleges and the graduate school. N.C. State has over 31,000 students enrolled. The school was founded in 1887 as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. As a public school, N.C. State can offer North Carolina residents tuition rates heavily subsidized by state tax dollars. The school's athletic teams participate in NCAA Division I sports in the Atlantic Coast Conference. N.C. State has 23 dormitory and apartment complexes that undergraduate students can apply to live in.

    Shaw University

    • Shaw is a Baptist-affiliated historically black university, founded in 1865. The school is private and offers a liberal arts undergraduate education to both men and women. Graduate programs are offered in education, emergency management and divinity. Freshman and sophomore students must live in campus housing unless they meet certain exemptions. Shaw participates in nine different Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association sports at the NCAA Division II level.
