    • Appalachian State University in Boone is located in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains and enrolls more than 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students. This university offers more than 140 bachelor's and graduate programs in accounting, Appalachian studies, technology, athletics, chemistry, education, counseling and library science. Appalachian and the Community Together arranges community service and service-learning projects in North Carolina and internationally. The Appalachian ACCESS scholarship program awards scholarships to students from low-income North Carolina families.     • The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's student body consists of 28,916 undergraduate and graduate students. UNC offers more than 200 bachelor's and postgraduate degrees in health and medicine, fine arts, music, education, communications, linguistics and sciences. This state college receives research contracts and grants from federal agencies such as the National Institutes of Health. Several faculty members have won prestigious awards, including the Nobel Prize in Medicine. In fall 2009, UNC opened the North Carolina Cancer Hospital, the state's first public cancer hospital.

UNC-Wilmington awards bachelor's degrees in 52 majors and 35 master's degrees in education, marine biology, science, nursing, business, fine arts, computer science and information systems, and gerontology. U.S. News and World Report ranks UNC-Wilmington as one of the top 10 public master's universities in the South. This state university is recognized by the Peace Corps for its students' volunteer service, including their work during Hurricane Katrina.
