North Carolina Division 1 Colleges

According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association, a school seeking Division 1 athletic status must offer at least 14 sports options--either seven each for men and women or six for men and eight for women. In 2010 a North Carolina school, Duke University, won the Division 1 national men's basketball championship--a year after another North Carolina school, the University of North Carolina, won that championship. Students in North Carolina interested in playing for or attending a Division 1 school have a variety of options.
