Colleges in Ohio That Have Western Riding Teams

Going off to college doesn't mean giving up riding. In fact, it can lead to new competition, and a new sport for those who have always wanted to ride. All of these schools are members of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA), the governing body for equestrian competition between riding teams. Ohio schools are in zone six, region one of the IHSA. Western teams compete in horsemanship, reining, and western pleasure. Some Western college riding teams also compete in local open horse shows.
  1. University of Akron

    • The Western branch of the University of Akron's equestrian team, the Zips, began in 2006. It competes in area regional shows in reining and western horsemanship along with IHSA events. Riders are required to take one lesson a week. In 2008, the western team was reserve champion in their IHSA region. In IHSA, riders compete on their own level, in divisions of beginner, intermediate, novice, advanced and open.

    Kent State University

    • The Kent State University Equestrian Team has both western and hunt seat riders and is open to beginners as well as experienced equestrians. Teams take one lesson a week, with horses and equipment provided. Riders may use their own saddles if it correctly fits the school horse. Riders with their own horses are encouraged to take lessons on school horses, as personal horses are not permitted in IHSA competition. Helmets are required for western as well as English riders.

    Oberlin College

    • Oberlin's western equestrian team competes in four one-day shows, generally held on a Saturday. To make competition affordable, the team subsidizes 50 percent of showing fees. Team members can share clothing to make sure everyone has proper attire. With all IHSA shows, the true emphasis is on sportsmanship and learning about horses. The same coach trains the English and western teams. Lessons are taught at a barn just 1 mile away from the university.
