Colleges in Ohio That Offer Forensic Science

In simple terms, forensic science is the method of applying science to the law. Forensic scientists use scientific evaluation to link evidence to a criminal. Forensic evaluation may help in proving a suspect's innocence or guilt. In Ohio, the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) recognizes four accredited forensic science programs at three different colleges and universities.
  1. Youngstown State University

    • As a division within the Bitonte College of Health and Human Services, Youngstown State University's Department of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences offers a forensic science major with a Bachelor of Science in applied science. The program is Ohio's only AAFS-accredited undergraduate degree specifically in forensic science. In addition to classroom study, Youngstown State University notes that forensic science skills are learned on the job. To encourage on-the-job training, the university requires all forensic science students to complete an internship at a forensic science laboratory prior to earning a degree.

    Ohio University

    • Ohio University offers forensic programs on both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Specifically, Ohio University's forensic programs focus on the specialty of forensic chemistry. At the undergraduate level, students select between career tracks for trace evidence or DNA analysis. Students who choose the DNA analyst track frequently complete a minor in biological sciences in addition to their forensic chemistry major. At the graduate level, Ohio University offers a Ph.D. in chemistry with a forensics concentration.

The associate's degree emphasizes crime scene investigation and the skills necessary to serve as a field agent. While bachelor's and master's degree programs typically lead to laboratory analyst jobs, the associate's degree may lead to a career in law enforcement, criminal justice or private investigation.
