Ohio Colleges That Offer Zoology

Students of zoology, the biological study of animals, find careers in industries like veterinary medicine, scientific research or teaching, human medicine, even dentistry. Undergraduate degrees can land graduates in entry-level positions as laboratory technicians, research assistants or staff members. A graduate degree in zoology provides opportunities for independent research in academia, government wildlife agencies, or private consulting firms. Several Ohio colleges offer zoology courses --- with one boasting one of the nation's largest zoology departments.
  1. Ohio Wesleyan University

    • The zoology department at Ohio Wesleyan University, located in the central town of Delaware, offers a zoology major with five optional branches. Each maintains the same core classwork, then allows students to combine zoology with genetics, medicine, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, or environmental work. The department maintains updated technology equipment --- including digital imaging devices and laboratory microscopes --- and helps students secure apprenticeships at the local Stratford Ecological Center and the nearby Columbus Zoo. The department gives out several scholarships and awards annually.

    Ohio State University

    • The College of Biological Sciences at Ohio State University, in Columbus, offers a bachelor's degree in zoology. The school recommends that students have a background in biology, math and chemistry, and requires them to have completed a high school college preparatory program and the ACT or SAT. The program combines courses in ecology, evolution, animal diversity and systematics, cellular biology, and animal form and function. The program focuses on hands-on experiences --- a research project, for example, and co-curricular activities like the Zoology Club. Also available is the Scholars Program, in which students can get academic advising from faculty and other students, and collaborate on research and other work in the laboratory or the field.

    University of Miami

    • As one of the largest zoology programs in the country, the Department of Zoology at the University of Miami awards undergraduate and graduate degrees. While in the western town of Oxford, undergraduates may pursue a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree; the BS focuses more on science courses, while the BA is designed more for students interested in health careers. Graduate students may pursue a master's or PhD; their research may focus on evolutionary biology, cell and developmental biology, physiology, aquatic or behavioral ecology, neurobiology, environmental toxicology, or genetics.
