Many online universities offer a forensics degree. Some schools have crime scene investigation as well as forensics programs. These schools, online, include Kaplan University, American Intercontinental University and Ashford University. South University and Salem University also offer these programs online. Online universities include the University of Alaska as well as on-site Kaplan University programs. In these programs, students study what crime scenes look like and how to investigate these scenes. They take classes in which they work in mock crime scenes, and classes in laboratories dealing with handling forensic material. The courses combine to teach students how to work a crime scene so they can obtain a job in that area.
Forensic pathology focuses on forensics and also on the pathology of the victims and their bodies. Several online schools offer this type of degree. These include Walden, Kaplan and Western University. Western International University, St. Joseph University and University of Phoenix also offer programs that specialize in the pathology aspect of forensic studies. Offline degree programs include almost all National American University programs, as well as on-site Kaplan University programs. Courses in this area deal with forensic pathology to learn about the body as it decomposes, and how to find clues in living and non-living material. Classes also include anatomy courses and general forensic courses to learn about gathering clues and information from a scene.
With the popularity of the Internet, cyber crime is also on the rise. Universities, again online, that have degrees in these types of programs include Kaplan University, Strayer University and the University of Phoenix. Offline degree programs in this area include Walden University, Virginia College and on-campus Kaplan University sites. The classes in this course of study revolve mostly around computers and the Internet. Students take a wide variety of classes to learn about spam and scam artists, and to learn how to hack computers so they can recognize the signs of hacking. They also take computer courses to learn the art of tracing people online and deciphering online clues.
Criminal Investigation is also a part of forensic degree programs. These programs are more rare. You can find both online and on-site programs at Everest University and Colorado Technical University. Criminal Investigation courses deal with all aspects of investigation of a crime, but focus mostly on the physiological aspects of dealing with criminals and suspects. Students take a wide variety of counseling and people-relations courses to learn about the human psyche and how it works, so they may investigate a crime through those that may or may not have perpetrated it.
