Colleges That Offer Performing Arts

The performing arts encompass many disciplines, including dance, stage acting, musical theater and musical performance. For many aspiring performing artists, a college degree can be an important step to launching a professional career. A number of colleges and universities offer programs in the performing arts.
  1. Adelphi University

    • Adelphi University offers undergraduate degree programs in the theater arts with specializations in acting and stage design, as well as degrees in music and dance. All students, with the exception of those interested in stage design, must successfully complete an audition process prior to gaining acceptance to the school. Theater students have the opportunity to participate in departmental productions; all music majors must complete a public recital as part of their degree requirement.

    The Juilliard School

    • The Juilliard School offers training in theater, music and dance with degrees at undergraduate and graduate levels, including an accelerated music program, which allows students to complete a bachelor's and master's degree simultaneously. Drama students may choose one of two tracks, actor training or playwriting; and all students have opportunities to participate in departmental productions and internships with professional performing arts organizations in New York City.

    The University of the Arts

    • The University of the Arts offers undergraduate and graduate programs in dance, music and theater arts with specializations available in acting, musical theater, theater design, directing, playwriting and production, composition, musical performance, ballet, jazz, modern dance and dance education. Students must pass an entrance audition to be admitted to the university.

    California Institute of the Arts

    • California Institute of the Arts offers numerous degree programs in the performing arts at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. Theater majors may specialize in acting, directing, playwriting, design, stage management or production management. Students interested in music may choose from programs in African music, North Indian music, percussion, guitar, harp, brass, jazz, musical arts, composition and musical technology.

    University of North Carolina School of the Arts

    • The University of North Carolina School of the Arts offers undergraduate programs in dance, drama, music and design, and production. Dance students may choose one of two concentrations, ballet or contemporary dance; theater students may choose a degree track in acting or directing; and music students also have the option of pursuing graduate or post-master's degree programs.
