The University of Louisville offers a Bachelor of Science degree in pre-dental hygiene, and because the university has a professional dental school, provides students seeking to study pre-dentistry unique opportunities. Two such opportunities are the Upper Division Pre-Placement Program and the the Pre-Dental Hygiene Living-Learning Community. The first allows 10 or so high-achieving students to gain pre-admission to the dental school given they keep their GPAs above the given minimum. The latter is a community of pre-dental students on campus and provides an extremely focused group and environment for the study of dentistry.
Northern Kentucky University offers a pre-dental program for undergraduate students. Students interested in the pre-dental program typically major in biology, chemistry or a mathematics field, and then are guided as to which classes to take to best prepare them for dental school. The pre-dentistry program provides students with advisers, a community of students pursuing the same goals and research opportunities that make students more desirable to dental school.
The University of Kentucky does not offer a pre-dental major; however, the university offers a pre-dental plan. Under the its pre-dental plan, the university quotes the American Dental Education Association, which states that students do not need to major in a science related degree to gain admission to dental school. Rather, students must complete a handful of basic science courses to prepare them for admission exams and the first years of dental school. Therefore, the University of Kentucky encourages pre-dental students to major in the area of their choice, and then provides advisers to guide the students as to which classes to take to best prepare for dental school.
Murray State University offers pre-dentistry programs and claims a high acceptance rate of pre-dentistry students into dental school. With the University of Kentucky Dental School and Louisville University Dental School nearby, students of Murray State University have the benefit of two renowned dental schools that are close to the school and familiar with its students. Murray State University suggests students strongly focus on the natural sciences to best prepare for the DAT and dental school admission.
