Colleges in Oahu That Have Performing Arts Courses

The beautiful island of Oahu, Hawaii has dozens of institutions of higher learning, offering a vast array of academic programs and career tracks. However, only a handful of the colleges and universities on Oahu offer performing arts courses. Of those schools, there is a full array of course and program offerings in the performing arts, from music to theater and dance. Unique to Hawaii, some of the performing arts programs focus on Hawaiian dance and performance.
  1. Chaminade University

    • Chaminade University, located in the heart of Honolulu, offers a minor in performing arts as an option for its undergraduates who seek a well-rounded education that includes performance opportunities. The school's minor program has a special focus on musical theater, mounting full-scale musical and straight play productions several times per year. The approach to the performance arts minor at Chaminade is very hands-on, and includes opportunities in traditional dance, music studies and theater.

Unlike the aesthetically driven program at Chaminade University, the goal of the program at HCC is to prepare the student for a professional career in the music industry. Students learn about all aspects of professional music performance, including business concerns, songwriting and publishing, music production and artist management. The school also houses the Hawaiian Music Archives collection, one of the largest collections of Hawaiian and Polynesian compositions in the world, for use by its students.
