The University of Michigan's School of Music, Theatre and Dance is one of the top-ranked performing arts programs in the country. It offers concentrations in dance, music, musical theater and theater. A wide range of performing opportunities abound within the program, as students and faculty present more than 450 concerts, recitals and staged performances in Ann Arbor every year. Alumni have appeared on Broadway, television and film, toured with major dance companies, and performed in operas and with world-class symphony orchestras.
The College of Music at Michigan State University, in East Lansing, offers undergraduate and graduate programs in a variety of instrument and voice specialties. Undergraduates can choose areas of study concentrating on music composition, jazz studies, music education and music performance. Opportunities for performance range from opera theater productions to modern jazz, contemporary and Latin music as well as chamber and classical.
Western Michigan University's College of Fine Arts is one of only eight similar, fully accredited colleges in the United States. It brings together performing and fine arts programs in art, dance, music and theater. The theater department is widely recognized as one of the nation's best undergraduate programs and is a regular winner of American College Theatre Festival awards. The dance program is also nationally recognized as one of only 60 institutions accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance.
Wayne State University, in Detroit, has combined various departments into one College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts. The college offers degree programs in art, communication, dance, music and theater. Students in the Department of Communication can major in broadcast journalism or film, while the departments of music, theater and dance offer traditional bachelor's degree programs in dance and music performance, as well as theater majors.
