Performing Arts Colleges in South Carolina

South Carolina has a number of performing arts colleges available if you are looking to major in music, theater or dance. Each school offers different concentrations and programs. Some offer degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Others offer degrees at only the undergraduate level. Before choosing the South Carolina performing arts college you would like to attend, research each school thoroughly and examine what each one has to offer.
  1. Coker College

    • As part of its Theatre, Dance and Music program, Coker College has a wide range of options for students looking to major in performing arts. The theater program offers concentrations in performance or technical theater. For Dance, there are concentrations in performance/choreography, dance production, movement analysis, dance therapies, dance aesthetics and history. Music majors may have concentrations in piano, voice, or musical theater, as well as a Bachelor in Music Education. According, to the Coker College website, with any of these three performing arts majors, you will have access to the Elizabeth Boatwright Coker Performing Arts Center, which includes the Watson Theater (a 466-seat proscenium theater) and the versatile 80-seat Black Box Theater. The performing arts center also houses two dance studios, a rehearsal studio, scene and costume shops, and Coker’s fine arts collection in the Stein Gallery.

    University of South Carolina – Columbia

    • The University of South Carolina – Columbia (USC) College of Arts & Sciences is the largest of its kind in the state. In the area of performing arts, the college features the Department of Theatre and Dance. This department offers an undergraduate BA in theater or dance, and, at the graduate level, the MFA degree in acting, design or directing, as well as MA and MAT degrees. The MFA in theatre is the highest degree possible in the design and performance field and USC is the only school in South Carolina that offers it.

    Winthrop University

    • The Winthrop University College of Visual and Performing Arts offers majors in art, design, music, theater and dance. Teacher licensing curricula are also offered in these areas. According to its website, this is the only comprehensive collegiate arts program nationally accredited in all the arts in the State of South Carolina, public or private. A particular highlight of the Winthrop University College of Visual and Performing Arts is the vast array of performances and art exhibitions held each year.
