Soon after the Civil War, Howard University was born as an idea to provide a place to educate African-American clergy. Within two years the school had grown to include many other areas of study, and eventually the College of Engineering, Architecture and Computer Sciences was formed. Within the college, Howard offers an undergraduate electrical engineering program. This program has become one of the top producers of African-American and other minority electrical engineers in America. The Washington, D.C., campus also offers graduate studies in engineering.
Not far from Howard University is the University of the District of Columbia. UDC is the district's only public university, made possible by a rare urban land grant. Within the university is the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, which includes the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. This department offers a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering with or without a computer engineering option. An electronics engineering program focuses on the maintenance and troubleshooting of analog and digital systems.
Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University has been a fixture of the Huntsville area since opening its doors in May 1875. This technological town, which is home to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center and the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, is not a surprising place to find a quality electrical engineering program. Alabama A&M offers a bachelor's degree program from its Department of Electrical Engineering. In addition, the program is the first to offer a master's degree program in materiel engineering. This program is open to qualified applicants who hold a bachelor's in engineering.
Located close to the main campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida A&M University and Florida State share a space for the FSU-FAMU College of Engineering. This joint engineering program offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in electrical and computer engineering. Engineering students take all major specific coursework at the engineering college, but they may acquire the remainder of the educational credits at either Florida A&M or Florida State.
