Owens Community College is located in Perrysburg, Ohio, and offers a diagnostic medical sonography program at the Toledo campus. The program ensures that graduates are able to obtain patient history, perform diagnostic procedures, analyze medical images, and provide written reports for physicians. On-the-job training offers students an opportunity to learn how to collaborate with other members of a health-care team. In addition to a high school diploma, applicants to the program must have passed high school algebra and chemistry.
Located in Elyria, Ohio, Lorain County Community College offers an Associate of Applied Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Students in the program learn to perform sonograms on various parts of the body, such as abdominal, obstetrics and gynecology, vascular, echocardiography and ophthalmology. The curriculum includes courses in medical terminology, patient care, ultrasound physics and instrumentation, pathology and allied health sciences. Students learn how to interact with patients, position equipment and recognize abnormal sonograpic patterns.
Cincinnati State Technical and Community College offers an Associate of Applied Science degree and certificate program in diagnostic medical sonography. While both programs prepare students for careers in the field, graduates with an associate degree have an opportunity to pursue a bachelor's degree in a health-related area. Core courses include patient care skills, issues in human diversity, disaster preparedness, pathophysiology, and principles of sonography. Clinical experiences take place in local medical facilities, including Bethesda North Hospital, The Christ Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital.
Central Ohio Technical College is located in Newark, Ohio, and offers an associate degree in diagnostic medical sonography. Two concentrations are available within the program. The general concentration focuses on abdominal, and obstetrics and gynecology sonography, while the cardiovascular concentration teaches students about cardiac and vascular sonography. First-year students focus on classroom work, and students in the second year complete clinical rotations five days per week.
