Sonography Colleges in Washington

Diagnostic medical sonographers work in collaboration with physicians and other medical staff to diagnose conditions and diseases. Prospective students complete a two-year associate degree or four-year bachelor's degree before qualifying to take the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography examination for certification to practice. Students may pursue a career in general sonography or specialize in the clinical practice fields of cardiac or vascular sonography.

    • Seattle University offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Diagnostic Ultrasound that may be completed in two years for students with an associate's degree or four years for general entry students. General entry students complete courses in modern civilization, philosophy of the human person, college writing and other social science courses during the first two years of the program. All students complete a total of 91 credits in major courses that include echocardiography, methods of cardiac evaluation, vascular evaluation, and research and professional issues. Students enrolled in the bachelor's degree program are eligible to take the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography certification examination one full year before graduating from the program.

    Spokane Community College

    • Spokane Community College offers a full-time Associate of Applied Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography that requires a minimum of 109 credits for completion. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the national abdominal and ob/gyn certification examination administered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. The program is comprised of general education and professional courses that include human cross-section anatomy, vascular fundamentals, ultrasound physics and instrumentation and ECHO fundamentals. Nearly half of the program is spent in full-time, supervised clinical placements at affiliated hospitals, medical clinics and doctors' offices. Students must maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average to avoid probationary status or dismissal from the program. Program applicants must possess a secondary school diploma or equivalent, pass the college entrance examinations, provide three letters of reference and complete a minimum of 40 volunteer hours in a medical or patient care facility.

    Tacoma Community College

    • The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at Tacoma Community College is a 21-month program that and awards graduates with an Associate of Applied Science degree. The program is offered on a full-time basis and includes in-class learning, laboratory work, case study seminars and clinical experience. Professional courses include pathophysiology, abdomen sonography, physics and instrumentation and patient care/scope of practice. The program begins in the fall semester of each year and students are introduced to clinical practice in the spring of that same school year. Clinical placements begin with observation opportunities and progress to performing diagnostic procedures under the supervision of registered hospital and clinic staff. Prior to admission to the program, prospective students must complete a number of prerequisite courses in human anatomy and physiology, general physics, medical terminology and pre-calculus. Graduates may take the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography's certification examination for licensing in abdominal and ob/gyn sonography.
