Chattanooga State Community College offers an advanced specialty certificate in diagnostic medical sonography. The program has two course tracks---general diagnostic medical sonography and cardiovascular sonography. The general program focuses on abdomen, small parts, and obstetrics and gynecology sonography while the cardiovascular program focuses on adult echocardiography and visceral plus peripheral vascular sonography. Course topics covered in the program include introduction to diagnostic medical sonography, ultrasound physics, obstetrics and gynecology, and clinical applications. The program lasts for 12 months, and students have both classroom study and clinical duties. The program is recognized by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center offers an 18-month certificate program in diagnostic medical sonography. The program features very small class sizes (five students at a time) and features didactic and clinical coursework. The program prepares students to take the certification exam offered by ARDMS. Courses in the program include sonographic patient care, cross-sectional anatomy, gynecological techniques, and foundations of ultrasound and health care. The school requires students to take an average of 33 course hours per week. Candidates must meet certain health requirements, including physical, mental and immunizations, before entering the program. The program is recognized by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

Volunteer State Community College offers a 13-month program that provides didactic and clinical training in general medical sonography. Prerequisites for the program include successful completion of an AMA-accredited, two-year patient care-related program or completion of a bachelor's degree with human anatomy, physiology I and II, medical terminology, general physics and college algebra. Required courses in the program include introduction to medical sonography, physics and instrumentation, abdominal scanning and small parts scanning. The program is recognized by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.
