Colleges for Diagnostic Medical Sonography

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, diagnostic medical sonographers have a favorable career outlook. This is one of the growing fields in the health care industry. Colleges offering diagnostic medical sonography programs help prepare students to take the examinations offered by the industry's certification bodies. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is the largest accrediting body for these programs.
  1. Trenholm State Technical College

    • Trenholm State Technical College offers an associate degree program in diagnostic medical sonography. The program has received accreditation from the CAAHEP. Students receive sonography education in abdominal, small parts, and obstetrics and gynecology. The program also includes an introduction to vascular sonography. Successful completion of the four-semester program allows students to take the national certification examinations given by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). The school's lab features two GE Logic 500 ultrasound systems as well as a Siemens Sequoia system.

    George Washington University Medical Center

    • George Washington University Medical Center offers a bachelor's degree program in diagnostic medical sonography. Students receive education in all facets of sonography including general, vascular and cardiac sonography, and can choose up to two areas for clinical rotations. Students must meet the 60-credit prerequisite before acceptance into the program. Once accepted, students who choose a single clinical rotation must complete 68 credit hours of coursework. Students choosing a dual clinical rotation must complete 72 credit hours of coursework. Course topics include introduction to physics of sonography, abdominal sonography and vascular technology. The program has received CAAHEP accreditation.

    Boise State University

    • The Radiologic Science Department overseas the diagnostic medical sonography program at Boise State University. The school's program lasts for one calendar year and students must meet a number of prerequisites, including having an associate degree or higher from a regionally accredited school, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and an active registration or license in good standing with the correct state or national agency. Candidates also must submit to a criminal background check at their own expense. The program has received accreditation from the CAAHEP. Coursework includes such topics as pathophysiology, comparative sectional imaging, Doppler procedures and abdominal sonography.
