Coursework includes classes in anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, office management, medical coding and medical insurance. Clinical courses cover basic medical assisting duties, such as documenting a patient's history, taking vital signs, drawing blood and using medical equipment. At the end of the program, students complete a 160-hour externship at a health care facility approved by Kaplan University. Coursework includes classes in radiography, anatomy and physiology and clinical and lab procedures. Two separate externship classes must be completed after students have received a final grade of at least a "C" on all other coursework. The entire program encompasses approximately 60 credit hours, and the tuition cost per semester was $6,688.00 as of August 2009.

Penn Foster College offers an online medical assistant program leading to an Associate degree in medical assisting. Coursework includes classes on medical terminology, theories of clinical practice, medical transcription, anatomy and physiology. Penn Foster College medical assistant students receive a clinical kit in the fourth semester of the program that they use to demonstrate skill mastery. Students must videotape themselves performing clinical skills and send the tape to faculty for approval or attend a local college where a proctor will observe skill demonstration. After passing the clinical procedures course, students must complete a 200-hour externship at an approved doctor's office or clinic. The first semester of this program costs $1,340 including registration, shipping and an admissions fee as of February 2010. The program encompasses 64 credits.
