The SUNY Downstate Medical Center offers a program in diagnostic medical imaging. This program was the first in the United States to offer a bachelor's of science degree in sonography, according to the SUNY website. The program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, so students are eligible to take the examinations given by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers upon graduation, according to SUNY's website.

The New York Methodist Hospital's School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography, affiliated with St. Francis's College in Brooklyn, offers a certificate program in sonography. Upon graduation from the two-year program, students are eligible to sit for the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography Certification Exam (ARDMS), which is required for employment as a diagnostic medical sonographer in New York. Students also earn 60 college credits that may be applied toward a bachelor's degree in radiologic services.
