Kuala Lumpur has two state universities with medical colleges. Universiti Kebangsaan of Malaysia is Malaysia's National University, established in 1970. Medical students enjoy a hands-on approach to learning at the UKM Medical Centre, built in 1997. The university's medical center is a prominent research facility, and the Tun Seri Lanag library on campus is the largest library in Southeast Asia.
University of Malaya, the country's oldest higher education institution, offers undergraduate and post-graduate degrees in several medical fields, and students gain experience in the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre. The university has won several prestigious awards for alternative energy and biotechnology research. The campus includes a vibrant cultural center, a botanical garden, an experimental farm and a biodiversity center.

University of Malaysia has two other campuses in other areas of the country with schools of medicine. Founded in 1971, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) began as an agricultural university and expanded later into award-winning programs in engineering, medicine, science, business and economics. International students from 59 nations have attended UPM, and it is considered to be a leading research institution in Malaysia, according to its website.
Universiti Sains Malaysia was founded in 1969 and follows a school system instead of a faculty system, which they believe allows a more interdisciplinary approach to education. The campus is called "a University in a Garden," according to its website, and is enclosed in lush greenery to remind students of the need for a connection between the intellectual and nature.

Malaysia also has professional schools that offer medical college programs. The Universiti Kuala Lumpur's Royal College of Medicine Perak works closely with Ipoh Hospital (a network of several regional hospitals) and several rural clinics to develop its curriculum and train students. Founded in 1999, the college has been the site of some British research studies. Facilities include several libraries and a pathology museum.
AIMST opened in October 2001 and shares a curriculum with the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom. All classes are taught in English, and language assistance is available to help local students achieve fluency. The very modern campus has computer laboratories and a large and growing library.
