  1. Emory University

    • Emory University offers a 28-month master of medical science program---physician assistant beginning in the fall semester of each year. The program begins with three consecutive semesters of learning fundamental health sciences through coursework, laboratory work and clinical experience. Once students have been prepared with these science foundations, the following two semesters involve seven core rotations that are each five weeks in length. Students take part in patient care under the supervision of attending medical and academic personnel to acquire clinical skills and to determine their practicing area of choice. Following core rotations, students participate in 18 weeks of clinical electives of three to four weeks in length each. The final semester of the program involves intensive coursework in professional and biomedical ethics issues and health promotion. Graduates are then prepared to write the National Certifying Examination for Primary Care Physician Assistants. During the past five years, a minimum of 89 percent of graduates have passed this certification exam on the first attempt. Applicants to this program must possess a bachelor's degree with a minimum grade-point average of 2.8 and prerequisite courses in biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology and microbiology.
