Emory University ranked 22nd overall among medical schools in the United States in 2009, according to "U.S. News & World Report." In the area of primary care, Emory was 42nd in the nation. Emory is also a top-20 medical program for research funding from the National Institutes of Health. The medical school consists of seven basic science departments and 20 clinical departments. Degree programs include the M.D. and the Ph.D. Other programs include physicians assistant training, medical imaging, anesthesiology and physical therapy. The university is also home to seven research centers, including the Center for Health in Aging and the Center for Neurodegenerative Disease.

The Morehouse School of Medicine ranked 54th in the nation for primary care, according to "U.S. News & World Report." Morehouse has degree options in addition to the M.D. degree. Morehouse offers a Master of Science in public health along with one in clinical research. In the area of biomedical science, the school offers the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Morehouse has 22 research centers, including the NASA Space Medicine Life Sciences Research Center and the National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer III: Community Networks Program.

Located in Macon, Mercer offers the traditional M.D. program and master's degree programs that include family therapy, public health and anesthesia. Residency programs at Mercer include family practice, internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology. Research opportunities are also available at Mercer. Faculty members are engaged in ongoing research in their own fields of interest, but because the university does not offer a Ph.D., student research is more limited.
