Medical schools generally don't give a specific grade point average requirement, but private schools that are prestigious and receive many applicants can afford to be selective with who they accept. Students at Harvard Medical School had an average undergraduate grade point average of 3.79, while students at Johns Hopkins University had an average undergraduate grade point average of 3.87. Check the admissions page of the school you wish to attend to see if there is a minimum grade point average for acceptance.
Candidates who wish to be eligible for medical school must take the MCAT. The MCAT is a multiple-choice test divided into four sections: physical sciences, verbal reasoning, biological sciences and writing samples. The physical sciences, verbal reasoning and biological sciences sections are multiple choice and are scored on a scale of 1 to 15, 15 being the highest. The writing sample is scored on a scale of J to T, T being the highest. Private schools do not have a minimum required score for enterence. Students at Johns Hopkins Medical School and Harvard Medical School averaged 12.00 on their MCAT biology and physical scores, averaged an 11.00 on their MCAT verbal scores and averaged between a "Q" and an "R" on their MCAT essays.
Most medical schools require that you apply through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS). The AMCAS includes your MCAT score and university transcript. Applicants must also include a personal statement and talk about extracurricular activities they did while during their undergraduate career. Many medical schools will require candidates to have completed two years of chemistry (one of those years should be organic chemistry), one year of biology and one year of physics. If the medical school you are applying to feels that you are a strong candidate, it will send you a secondary application. The secondary application involves completing essays on topics predetermined by the school you are applying to.
Candidates who pass the secondary application process go to the school for an interview. Interviewers are typically faculty from the school, and the interview can take place as a group interview or as a one-on-one interview. The interview is designed to reveal the character and personality of the candidate beyond the MCAT scores and application. Being invited to interview with a school is not a guarantee of acceptance.
