Ferris State University has a sonography program which takes six semesters to complete and results in an Associate in Applied Science degree. Students will complete at least 80 credit hours to graduate. Prerequisite courses include biology, math, English, medical vocabulary and physics. Core curriculum courses include introduction to sonographyic imaging and ultrasound physics, pathophysiology of abdominal organs, small parts and invasive procedures and sonographic interpretation. Support courses in the program include health care safety issues, ethics in health care and introduction to psychology. Students will get classroom, lab and clinical training. The last three semesters also include internships, during which students work in a health care setting.

Oakland Community College (OCC) has a sonography program which requires at least 73 credit hours to complete. Admission requirements include passing a drug test and criminal background check. Graduates earn an Associate in Applied Science degree. Required general education classes include English, fine arts, humanities, math, physical education and physical and social sciences. Core degree coursework includes fundamentals of sonography, cross sectional anatomy, sonography physics and OB/GYN patho imaging. Support classes include human anatomy and physiology, psychology and communication. Students are encouraged but not required to take a medical ethics course. OCC’s sonography program includes class and lab instruction and clinicals for students to practice their sonography skills.

Lansing Community College offers an Associate in Applied Science degree in the field of sonography. It is a six-semester program that begins each summer and takes 15 months to complete. Applicants must pass a criminal background check and drug test to be accepted into the program. Students will need to take at least 68 credit hours in general and core classes. They will complete 9 to 12 hours of general education classes, including communication, math, science, writing and global perspectives and diversity. Core degree classes include physics, introduction to sonography scanning, sonography positioning, physics and instrumentation, and abdomen and OB-GYN sonography. The program includes classroom instruction and clinical experience for students to practice what they have learned.
