Diagnostic Medical Sonography Schools in Michigan

Diagnostic medical sonography, also known as ultrasound, refers to the application of sound waves to produce computerized images that are used to analyze and diagnose medical conditions and injuries. According to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of diagnostic medical sonographers is projected to expand by 18 percent through 2018. Six schools in Michigan offer training in diagnostic medical sonography.

    • Ferris State University offers an associate in applied science degree in diagnostic medical sonography. Students must complete coursework in anatomy, physiology and physics before entering the program. Coursework at Ferris State includes physics and imaging, invasive procedures, safety issues, pathophysiology, sonographic interpretation, obstetrics, hemodynamics, ethics and clinical training.

    Baker College

    • Baker College offers an associate of applied science degree in diagnostic medical sonography at its campuses in Auburn Hills and Owosso. Students complete coursework in anatomy and physiology, sonographic physics and pathophysiology in addition to practical training in the physics, instrumentation and application of ultrasound equipment and procedures.

    Oakland Community College

    • Oakland Community College offers an associate in applied science degree program in diagnostic medical sonography at its Southfield campus. This program consists of coursework in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, English, psychology and physics followed by professional sonography theory and training courses. Clinical rotations at local medical centers and hospitals are also required.

    Delta College

    • Delta College offers both an associate's degree as well as an advanced certificate program in diagnostic medical sonography. The degree program includes additional general-education coursework in anatomy and physiology, physics, medical terminology, ethics, sociology and psychology. Both programs require five semesters of specialized coursework, including physics and instrumentation of ultrasound, scanning, patient care, abdominal and small-parts sonography, obstetrics, neurologic and vascular sonography and clinical training.

    Lansing Community College

    • Lansing Community College offers an associate degree in applied science in diagnostic medical sonography. In addition to general-education coursework in the liberal arts and sciences, students take courses in sonographic physics and instrumentation, obstetric and gynecological sonography and abdominal sonography. Students also receive hands-on clinical training at professional sites in the area, such as hospitals and medical centers.

    • Lake Michigan College offers an associate degree program in diagnostic medical sonography; credits can be transferred toward a four-year bachelor’s degree on sonographic technology. Prerequisite courses in biology, anatomy, chemistry, physics, medical terminology, algebra and psychology are required. These are followed by specialized major coursework in abdominal, obstetric and vascular sonography, sonographic physics and clinical training.
