The School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography at Southside Regional Medical Center offers a certificate program in ultrasound. Candidates must be graduates of an allied health training program with a GPA of at least 2.5 in coursework in biology, medical ethics and law, pathophysiology, medical terminology, patient care, anatomy and physiology, math, physics and communication. This four-semester program consists of coursework in abdominal and small parts imaging, ultrasound physics, obstetric and gynecological sonography, vascular ultrasound and clinical applications. It is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and approved by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.

Northern Virginia Community College has multiple campus locations throughout the state, including Annandale, Alexandria, Loudoun, Manassas, Springfield, Woodbridge and Washington, D.C. It offers a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography with further specialization in two areas: echocardiography and vascular sonography. Candidates must complete one semester of coursework in anatomy and physiology, introductory sonography, ultrasound physics, English composition and math in order to be considered for admission. The program consists of five semesters of theoretical and practical instruction in sectional anatomy, ultrasound physics and instrumentation, laboratory applications and sonographic procedures.

Tidewater Community College offers a CAAHEP-accredited Associate of Applied Science degree program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. In addition holding a high school diploma, candidates complete placement tests in English and math in order to be considered for admission. Successful applicants must hold current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification and maintain a minimum average of “C” throughout the program. This five-semester program begins with prerequisite coursework in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, math, physics, introductory health care and CPR. Students receive thorough training in all aspects of ultrasound technology and its medical application, including physics and instrumentation, sectional anatomy and sonographic procedures for the abdomen, female reproductive systems and vascular systems.
