Mountain State University offers online associate, bachelor's and certificate programs in diagnostic sonography. Each program offers an increasing depth of study into the field with the associate's degree program focusing on the abdomen, gynecology and obstetrics, the bachelor's program teaches echocardiography and vascular sonography and diagnostic sonography certification teaches the subject in a general fashion. Students complete several prerequisites before joining the online degree program including volunteer hours in a hospital or other medical facility and attaining CPR certification. Students must also maintain a 2.5 GPA in order to graduate from any sonography program successfully. Mountain State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges.

Virginia College offers online associate degrees in science and applied science in diagnostic medical sonography. Each program requires a credit total of around 100 credits and teaches the student human anatomy, scanning the body in each area, physics principles and career exploration. This program may not be completed exclusively online as students must complete an internship with a hospital or other medical diagnostic facility as part of clinical rounds. The online associate's degree in allied health sciences with South University can prepare a student to assume a role as a diagnostic sonographer. The curriculum in anatomy, biology, medical science and procedures, nutrition and pathophysiology prepares a student for a variety of entry-level positions in the health care field.
