This online program is designed for certified sonographers who wish to upgrade their credentials from a diploma or associate degree to a bachelor's degree. Delivered through a variety of online multimedia in addition to conventional print materials, the program curriculum aims to train students in procedural and analytical documentation of test results, patient care and education, and the acquisition and evaluation of clinical records and information for the purposes of diagnosis. Courses include diagnostic imaging, sonogrophic specialties, digital medical imagining, diagnostic imaging, pathophysiology and research methods. The Department of Allied Health at Washburn University offers a certificate and baccalaureate program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography in one of three concentrations: general, cardiac and vascular. Applicants must hold a two-year allied health credential in a subject related to patient care, such as respiratory therapy, physical therapy, nursing or radiologic technology. To earn a certificate, students complete a year of cardiac or vascular concentration course work. To upgrade their credential to a degree, students can complete two years of course work in the general and vascular concentrations.
The majority of requirements are delivered online with the exception of clinical rotations that must be performed in-person. Course topics include ultrasound, physics and instrumentation, procedures, CV monitoring and scanning and human diseases.

Mountain State University offers both an Associate of Science and a Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Prerequisite course work in anatomy and physiology, algebra, computer science, medical terminology, physics, psychology, English, humanities and fine arts must be completed prior to admission into the diagnostic medical sonography major. Candidates are selected according to their GPA, an interview, an entrance exam and any previous medical or clinical experience.
All course work is delivered online apart from a clinical practicum that can be performed in the student's home community. Course topics include medical ethics, ultrasound physics, anatomy, instrumentation and clinical pathophysiology.
