Washburn University offers both a certificate and a baccalaureate degree program in diagnostic medical sonography. To be considered for admission, you must hold a two-year diploma or degree in an allied health field pertaining to patient care, such as nursing, physical or respiratory therapy, or radiologic technology.
All coursework is delivered in an online, distance-learning format with the exception of an on-site orientation session and a clinical training practicum, which can be completed in your home community. Choose from three concentrations: vascular, cardiac and general/vascular. The first two specialties require 14 months of study with a yearly start date in May, leading to a certificate. The combined general/vascular specialty requires two years of study with a yearly start date in August, leading to a degree. Coursework includes the physics and instrumentation of ultrasound technology, clinical procedures, human diseases and CV monitoring and scanning.
