The Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa offers a certificate of completion in diagnostic medical sonography and a baccalaureate degree in radiation sciences. Students in both programs receive specialized training in obstetrical and gynecological sonography, as well as abdominal sonography, vascular technology and neurosonography. The curriculum combines both theoretical classroom education and practical clinical training, with 40 hours a week of hands-on experience in a hospital setting.

Chartered by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Kettering College of Medical Arts offers a bachelor of science in medical sonography. Students must complete one year of prerequisite foundational coursework, including anatomy and physiology, biblical resources for the understanding of health care, algebra, trigonometry, physics and medical terminology. After completing these requirements, students progress onto upper-level coursework in the physics and instrumentation of ultrasound, vascular and abdominal sonography, gynecological sonography and obstetrical sonography.

Montgomery College offers an associate of applied science in diagnostic medical sonography. A series of general education and prerequisite coursework is required, including anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and disease concepts. Specialty coursework include physics, instrumentation, abdominal sonography and obstetrics/gynecology sonography. Multiple sonography practicum courses are also required, providing students with valuable hands-on training.
