The Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences at the University of Oklahoma offers a four-year Bachelor of Science in medical imaging and radiation sciences with a major in sonography. Candidates must complete prerequisite coursework in algebra, chemistry, medical terminology, physiology, zoology, English, history and psychology with a GPA of at least 2.5 to be considered for admission.
The program consists of both theoretical classroom lectures and clinical training at affiliated hospitals and medical centers within the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metropolitan areas. Students have the opportunity to specialize their studies in general or cardiac sonography. Coursework include anatomy, ethics, embryology, pathology, patient care, radiological physics, safety and protective procedures, ultrasound physics and instrumentation, cardiac sonography, abdominal sonography, obstetrical sonography, medical imaging and vascular sonography.

The Moore Norman Technology Center is a career-focused training institute that offers a 1,950-hour diploma program in diagnostic medical sonography. Students can attend this program on a part-time or full-time basis. Coursework includes abdominal ultrasound, obstetrical and gynecological ultrasound, vascular ultrasound, small parts scanning on thyroid, breast and similar structures, patient care, safety procedures and technical data analysis.

With only two schools in Oklahoma offering training in diagnostic medical sonograhy, students may wish to pursue a credential through online distance learning. There are four schools in the United States that currently offer distance education programs in diagnostic medical sonography. All theoretical coursework is offered online with the exception of internship requirements that can be completed at clinical sites in the student’s home community.
Mountain State University offers an Associate of Science, a Bachelor of Science and a certificate program in diagnostic medical sonography. Jackson Community College offers an Associate in Applied Acience with optional majors in general sonography, vascular sonography and cardiac sonography. Both Washburn University and the Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences offer an online Bachelor of Science completion degree program with a major in diagnostic medical sonography for students who wish to upgrade their current credentials.
