Founded in 1975, the University of Massachusetts Lowell was established after Lowell State College and Lowell Technological Institute merged. The northwestern Massachusetts school is now part of the University of Massachusetts system of public colleges and universities. Lowell’s academic catalog features nearly 120 undergraduate and graduate degree programs within its five colleges. A certificate program in information technology is offered by the university’s continuing education division. The 14-week program includes two required courses in information systems and Microsoft Office, and a host of electives in programming, database and multimedia, among others. As a convenient option for adult students and those with careers, the school allows students to complete degree requirements on campus, online or a through a combination of both.

Established in 1819, the University of Virginia is a public research university.whose academic catalog features continuing and professional studies along with traditional undergraduate and graduate degree programs. A certificate in information technology is offered by the university’s School of Continuing & Professional Studies. To earn the certificate, students must complete several required courses and choose between two elective courses. The curriculum includes training in web design, project management and Java programming, among other pertinent IT skill sets. Students can complete coursework online or on campus at the university’s Northern Virginia Center.

The University of Florida, established in 1853, is in the northern Florida city of Gainesville. The university features a free information technology certification program for members of faculty and staff. Hosted by the Office of Information Technology, the program includes tracks in IT security, office support and a technical track. Each of the tracks includes required courses and several electives, and all take less than 18 months to complete.
