North & South Carolina Colleges

North and South Carolina are home to a number of two- and four-year colleges, universities and other institutions of higher education. These include nondenominational public and private schools as well as religious institutions. Both states have extensive state university systems as well as community and technical colleges. Some of the better-known institutions in these states include Duke University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Wake Forest University, Clemson University and the University of South Carolina at Columbia.
  1. Public Universities

    • Public universities in North Carolina are part of the University of North Carolina system, which encompasses 17 separate four-year universities, including Appalachian State University, East Carolina University, the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. South Carolina's public universities include the eight schools of the University of South Carolina system, the historically black South Carolina State University, Clemson, Lander and Francis Marion universities and the Citadel Military College.

    Private Colleges and Universities

    • North Carolina is home to a number of private colleges and universities, including well-known Duke University, Wake Forest University, Shaw University and Greensboro College. The state also has smaller colleges such as Lees-McRae and Wingate University. South Carolina's private colleges and universities include Claflin University, Anderson University and Vorhees College.

    Community Colleges

    • The North Carolina Community College System includes nearly 60 public community colleges and enrolls close to 80,000 students as of 2011. The system also includes the North Carolina Learning Object Repository, a central location for digital learning resources. South Carolina's community colleges aren't as centrally organized, and include a number of two-year technical colleges, as well as Spartanburg Methodist College and Spartanburg Community College.

    Religious Institutions

    • Both North and South Carolina are home to religious colleges and universities. These include Baptist schools such as Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Southeastern Free Will Baptist College and Piedmont Baptist College in North Carolina and Anderson University, Charleston Southern University and North Greenville University in South Carolina. North Carolina also is home to the New Life Theological Seminary, Mid-Atlantic Christian University and Methodist University. South Carolina is home to Bob Jones University, Southern Wesleyan University, Columbia International University, the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary and Southern Methodist College.
