Information on North Carolina Colleges

North Carolina holds the distinction of being the first state in the country to create a public university, The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Today there are more than 200 public and private universities and colleges throughout the state, providing options for thousands of people seeking higher education in North Carolina.
  1. The Agricultural and Technical College of North Carolina

    • Established in 1891 as a college for African Americans, The Agricultural and Technical College of North Carolina, was given university status in 1967. Five years later, North Carolina A&T was integrated into The University of North Carolina system.

      Located in Greensboro, North Carolina, on 200 acres, A&T is recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a distinguished, doctoral-granting research university. In addition to its main campus, the university also has a 600-acre farm that is both classroom and research center.

      North Carolina A&T offers its 10,000 students the option of 117 undergraduate degree programs and more than 58 master's and Ph.D programs in such disciplines as mechanical, electrical and industrial engineering, energy and environmental studies and business.

    UNC Chapel Hill

    • As the nation's first public university, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is simply known as Carolina. Located in the small college town of Chapel Hill, it is more than just a collegiate sports powerhouse. It is consistently ranked among the best and most competitive universities in the United States and is also considered one of the most affordable.

      Carolina offers its more than 28,000 students 77 bachelor's, 107 master's, 69 Ph.D and six professional degree programs through its 15 colleges, including business, education medicine and law.

    Wake Forest University

    • Founded in 1834, Wake Forest University is a liberal arts college with a world-class research science lab. Wake Forest prides itself on offering its undergraduate students small classes that encourage critical thinking to help students develop informed opinions and communicate them both in writing and verbally.

      Located in Winston-Salem, Wake Forest is divided into six schools that off bachelor's, master's, law, medical and biomedical sciences and divinity programs. Its 5,000 undergraduate students have the advantage of a student-to-faculty ratio of approximately 12 to 1.

    Queens University of Charlotte

    • Queens University of Charlotte is a private university focused on liberal arts and professional degree programs. Founded in 1857 as a liberal arts college for women by the Presbyterian Church, Queens University is located in the heart of Charlotte.

      Queens University's seven colleges offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in such disciplines as arts and sciences, business, nursing, education and communications to its more than 2,500 students.

      Queens is home to five North Carolina Professors of the Year and international study and internship abroad programs that are ranked among the nation's best.
