The University of North Carolina Charlotte was the fourth university in the statewide University of North Carolina system, which numbers 16 institutions. UNC Charlotte is the largest university in the Charlotte area, offering 90 bachelor's degree programs, 62 master's degrees and 18 doctoral programs. Enrollment is nearly 25,000 students as of fall 2009.

Johnson C. Smith University is a private, historically black university founded in 1867. The school was the first historically black college to provide laptops to every student. Johnson C. Smith offers degrees in the College of Arts and Letters, the College of Professional Studies and the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, in addition to adult degree programs that cater to students over 25.

Queens University of Charlotte is a private school affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. The school offers 34 undergraduate degree programs, 50 concentrations and 10 graduate degree programs. Queens also offers distance learning courses, international study and honors programs.
