List of North Carolina Universities

North Carolina is home to several top-ranked public and private universities, including four universities ranked among the top 100 national universities by US News and World Report, and three ranked among the top 30 by the same magazine. Some of these universities have long academic traditions with centuries-old beginnings.
  1. Duke University Talent Identification Program

    • Duke University, a private research university, was founded in 1838. As of 2009, the school had about 6,500 undergraduates and over 7,000 graduate students. The university contains ten academic colleges and schools, including the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, the Fuqua School of Business, the Nicholas School of the Environment, the Pratt School of Engineering and more. The university also contains eight academic and research institutes, including the Duke Global Health Institute, the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences and the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions. Duke University has two campuses, known as East Campus and West Campus. Undergraduates at Duke spend their first year at East Campus. Duke University ranked 10th in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking of national universities.

    University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

    • The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, commonly referred to as UNC Chapel Hill, is a public research university that was founded in 1789. The university now functions as the University of North Carolina's flagship institution. As of 2009, the school had about 17,900 undergraduates and over 8,200 graduate students. The university contains 17 different colleges and schools, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the Kenan-Flagler Business School, the Gillings School of Global Public Health, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and more. Together these colleges and schools offer over 70 academic departments. The University of Carolina at Chapel Hill tied for 28th in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking of national universities.

    Wake Forest University

    • Wafe Forest University is a private research university that was founded in 1834. As of 2009, the school had nearly 4,500 undergraduates and 2,500 graduate students. The university contains seven colleges and schools, including the undergraduate Wake Forest College and School of Business and Accountancy, and the divinity, law, management, medicine and graduate schools. Wake Forest College offers bachelor's degrees in over 30 academic departments, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences offers master's degrees in 19 fields and doctoral degrees in 13 fields. Wake Forest University tied for 28th in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking of national universities.

    North Carolina State University

    • North Carolina State University at Raleigh, commonly referred to simply as NC State, is a public research university that was founded in 1887. The university now functions as the University of North Carolina system's primary technical institution. As of 2009, the school had over 23,500 undergraduates and nearly 7,500 graduate students. The university contains 12 colleges and schools, including colleges of agriculture and life sciences, design, education, engineering, humanities and social sciences, management, veterinary medicine and more. Together these schools offer over 300 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. North Carolina State University tied for 88th in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking of national universities.
